Melting snow and wet streets. Ice on the Black Eagle Dam!

Black Eagle Dam Thursday Afternoon

Black Eagle Dam is always a great place to take pictures at different times of the year. This morning I found it a mystical pattern of ice with some water running as well. By golly I even saw a couple people walking the River’s Edge Trail at the same time, which runs adjacent to the river on the south side.

Montana residents are a hardy bunch. I don’t care how cold and nasty the weather turns, most days you can see people walking the trail, walking in Gibson Park or even the hard-core joggers out for their exercise.

While we are chilly, the chinook winds are slowly eating away at the snow. That is a good thing. It allows the snow to slowly melt into the soil instead of rapidly running off!

The bad news is that we are below normal for snowpack this year in the mountains and that means we need more heavy wet spring snow or plenty of rain this spring. Let’s keep our fingers crossed. It happened last year, maybe again this year.
