How do you pack for a camping outing in this?

May 28, 2010

The rain continues to fall and is expected to continue overnight. Tapering off some Saturday but still cool. This is what we are all facing in Great Falls at mid-day! Take a look at this brief movie!

It looks like we will get a warmer outlook by Sunday and maybe even sunshine Monday when it’s time to pack up and head home!

Whatever way you celebrate this weekend, stay safe and have an enjoyable time!

The National Weather Service rainfall totals have been released Friday evening and they appear below.

Rainfall Accumulation Report

Rain in our future!

The slow moving low pressure system across the Pacific Northwest is resulting in a soggy outlook for Memorial Day weekend. The Natl Weather Service has released it’s evening report for rainfall totals from around the state. There is more on the way Friday and into the weekend. It does begin to warm up some by Sunday however.

It wouldn’t be a Memorial Day weekend without showers!

May 26, 2010

Northeast winds blowing our clouds around

Although temperatures are still in the 60’s a cooler northeast wind has approached gusts near 30 mph today and makes it feel a little chillier.

Several Pacific disturbances are planning to move through the state over the long Memorial Day weekend. I have seen some very nice holiday weekends, and others that have sent campers flocking back to town covered with snow.

We should be somewhere in the middle of that situation. Mostly cloudy and damp sums it up.  Highs in the low 50’s Friday and Saturday. Sunday upper 50’s and then Monday into the mid 60’s. It kind of follows the old story that the holiday weekend is wet and cold and the sun comes out Monday afternoon just as it’s time to pack up and head home. I hope we get better weather then that!

Enjoy your day. With 60’s and available moisture we may see some showers and thunderstorms late this afternoon and this evening.

Fred

Cloudy but mild. This is more like it!

Below Black Eagle Falls This Afternoon Along the Missouri

I was working on a short assignment today regarding the coming fire conditions and we shot it below the dam, so snapped this picture of water coming over the spillway. It was fit to be outside without a jacket for this project thanks to the wind shifting from the north to the south and into upper 50’s.

This is the island area below the dam where kayakers can launch from and part of the River’s Edge Trail. Pretty nice area for a walk!

The weekend still looks mixed with a chance of showers and highs in the 50’s and 60’s. That is better than the 40’s we had yesterday. Just be prepared with some rain gear if you plan on being out. Also be aware of high creeks and streams.

I hope you have a great day and you can expect upper 60’s tomorrow but stronger southwest winds.

Fred

What a difference a day makes!

May 24, 2010

You don’t even need to wait 24 hours for a change in our weather. Sunday was a beautiful day with a high temperature near 60 degrees and little wind. Today we are in the chilly 40’s with rain and cold gusty north winds!

The current weather system does not last long, but it is too chilly to be outdoors without some type of jacket. By tomorrow at this time we should see southwest winds quickly warming the temperatures back up in the upper 50’s.

By Wednesday mostly sunny with a high in the upper 60’s.

Then another disturbance rolls through from the northwest and by Thursday we have a chance of showers and thunderstorms with a high in the upper 60’s.

Friday as many head out of the holiday weekend mostly cloudy with a chance of showers and thunderstorms. High near 65.

Saturday and Sunday both look mostly cloudy at this point with a chance or rain and highs between 60 and 65 degrees.

The computer models will give as a better look at the holiday weekend later in the week.

In the meantime many of us today are reaching for the thermostat to warm things up!

Fred

A rainy Monday!

Sunshine on my shoulders! Enjoy! Rain coming.

May 21, 2010

lilacs out in bloom Friday enjoy the sunshine.

The smell of lilacs in the breeze is unmistakable. We are enjoying partly sunny conditions with southwest winds gusty, at times, up to 30 mph.

Enjoy the weather while you can, as our change to rain is on the way!

Rain should begin developing later tonight and the wind switches around to the northwest. Our low in the upper 30’s.

Saturday and Sunday both look mostly cloudy with rain likely Saturday and showers Sunday as well. Highs drip into the upper 40’s and low 50’s.

Monday looks to still be a good day for indoor activities at this point with rain likely. The snow level could be as low as 4,000′ so that could mean some mountain snow just before the long Memorial Day holiday. The high temperature near 50.

Lingering showers stick around during the week with the highs climbing back into the 60’s. As far as the holiday forecast, it’s too far out in time for the computer models to give us a good picture of what to expect. It would be nice to get the wet weather out-of-the-way this weekend and see a nice Memorial Day weekend.

I hope you enjoy your day!

Fred

Breezy with showers!

The sun was shining early this morning then a layer of clouds moved in and gave us a pretty good rain shower for an hour. Now the sun is back trying to come back out and the rain has stopped. It’s springtime in the Rockies!

The cool wind has rain has put a stop to the motorcycles, convertibles but not those visiting the ducks and geese at Gibson Pond. An enjoyable experience most anytime for most people!

As we get closer to the weekend we end up behind a cold front, that means cooler temperatures for the weekend. Also a pretty fair chance of seeing rain showers as well.

By Tuesday we get rid of the cooler temperatures and Wednesday the sun returns along with some 60’s. So we will take the moisture and remind ourselves that one of these days we will be complaining about the heat of summer!

Have a great day!

Meet Rob Quist from the Mission Mountain Wood Band!

May 19, 2010

Rob Quist from the Mission Mountain Wood Band

Expecting to see mostly cloudy skies for a good part of the day, it was nice to have the sun pop out and dry up the rainfall we saw overnight. Plenty of water on the deck this morning at 7 a.m. But by 9 a.m. we were seeing rays of sunshine and temperatures in the 60’s. Some wind gusts from the southwest near 30 mph pushed the clouds away at least for the time being.

We are still expecting the rest of the week to be mostly cloudy and showers, extending into the weekend. Cooler temperatures as well as we drop into the 50’s for the weekend.

I didn’t hear too much complaining about the rain but some were not real happy with the gusty winds. We have been spoiled with out recent beautiful weather.

This change in our weather pattern is all part of a system moving eastward across the Pacific Northwest, so we should expect spring showers!

Good news for those who may have missed the 30 minute interview I had this past Sunday on Face the State. It was Rob Quist talking about the reunion of the Mission Mountain Wood Band. They will be in Great Falls to benefit the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Association with an outdoor concert, Friday, June 25th. The concert is a part of the annual Lewis and Clark Festival. The program is now on our website krtv.com in case you missed it and want to see it. Rob is a childhood friend from Cut Bank where we both grew up as youngsters.

Have a great day!

We are entering a cloudy, showery spring stage!

May 18, 2010

We need the rain for all the spring flowers!

We certainly were spoiled with last weekend’s weather. Sunny, warm and for some even too hot! Now the trend is going to reverse itself and we go back into a string of days of mostly clouds and showers and thunderstorms.

It looks like the next round of moisture toward the weekend could even easily dump some snow at the higher elevations. Memorial Day is not far off and everyone starts watching the skies and the weather report to see what kind of holiday it will be.

One viewer the other day told me the 3 day holiday is always rainy and the sun comes out Monday afternoon when it is time to head home from camping. That has happened, in fact it wasn’t too many years ago that heavy snow chased campers back into town early!

Today has been a pleasant day. Despite some clouds, the sun shines through off and on. I was downtown earlier this morning and noticed a couple of people dining on the sidewalk outside one of hot dog businesses. Sure reminded me that spring was here, along with all the leaves popping out on the trees in the downtown area.

I hope you enjoy your day and get to take a moment to stop and smell the flowers!

Love the smell of spring!

May 17, 2010

I have always said that spring was my favorites season of the year, and for good reason. The sights, sounds and smells of life returning to all the trees and plants!

You can almost smell this apple blossom!

We had lots of apples from the tree last year, and judging from the blooms should have a fair share of apples this year.

The grass is green, the dandelions are yellow. Too many things to get caught up on in one weekend but enough to make me happy.

We are in the season when showers and thunderstorms can pop up during late afternoon and evening and that looks to be the trend this week. I carry a weather radio and also have weather alerts sent to my phone so I don’t miss one to see if it should be aired on KRTV.

I hope you had a pleasant weekend, the weather sure cooperated!
