I will keep today’s blog short. Read to students in summer school this morning at Whittier School and had a great time with them.

Our weather pattern looks to keep me busy this afternoon and evening.

A gradual cool down but the next couple of afternoons look pretty active for potential thunderstorms!

A week and weekend to remember!

June 28, 2010

It certainly was a beautiful weekend for outdoor activities and events. There were many scattered around the area. Have you ever had a full week went everything was wonderful? It was for us!

I was honored that I was asked to be the Grand Marshall at the Fort Benton Centennial Celebration! The event seems to get bigger and bigger every year!

Fred and Vi Pfeiffer in Fort Benton June 26, 2010

From the Celebration it was off to the French Creek to cut down some more beetle killed trees. While sitting having coffee Sunday morning it was nice to look out the window and see several deer wandering around in the peace and quiet of the morning.

I am having breakfast too!

Thursday was a busy day too. I was asked to speak at Camp Francis by Peace Hospice. We could not have asked for a more beautiful morning. The camp for the youngsters started on the previous Sunday and all got soaking wet. I suggested they call it Camp Sponge Bob. I want to thank them for me to speak to the youngsters, their family and all the volunteers and leaders.

The most emotional and beautiful had to be the release of all the balloons with loved ones names written on them, launched skyward. It was an amazing sight to release a balloon and have it join all the others.

Minutes Later and Still Visible!

Thank you to all we met this past week and may your week coming up be wonderful too!

What a wondeful summer weekend ahead!

June 25, 2010

Building clouds could mean evening showers!Looking to the southeast, building clouds this afternoon that could mean a chance of showers and thunderstorms tonight. There is a possibility that some rainfall could be heavy at times.

Everything changes into a wonderful weekend by Saturday with mostly sunny skies and a high in the upper 70’s. Perfect weather for the many outdoor activities that are planned around the area Saturday.

Sunday the nice weekend gets even better with a high in the low 80’s.

Monday the thermostat goes way up with a high near 90 degrees!

Tuesday looks warm as well with upper 80’s before cooling into the lower 80’s by Wednesday.

If you are looking for some heat relief after that run of hot temperatures Thursday and Friday we return to the mid 70’s.

So much going on this weekend! I will be in Fort Benton and have asked to be the Summer Celebration Parade Grand Marshall. A new experience for me, the grand marshall deal, but not Summer Celebration. It is always a lot of fun and lots of action packed activities! I am honored that I was asked to participate.

I hope you have a safe and wonderful weekend!

Up and away all those beautiful balloons!

June 24, 2010

It has been an enjoyable and memorable day for me. My wife and I both went to Camp Francis, an outing lasting nearly a week sponsored by Peace Hospice of Montana. It is designed for youngsters to attend the camp to understand the steps of grief and learning ways to cope with the loss of someone close to them.

I talked about how dealing with death and grief is like a violent storm. It never completely ends but time does have a way of healing and giving us the good memories of those who have passed before us. I shared my experiences with grief especially with the loss of a 13-year-old grandson, almost four years ago.

What made it extra special as well was my wife accompanied me and today is our wedding anniversary! A great way to spend part of the day with two dozen young people along with their families as they struggle with the loss of life.

At the end of the program everyone released balloons with the names of their loved one’s on them. The view of the balloons rising upward was spectacular. I managed to snap a few pictures as the balloons were heading skyward. My thanks to the Peace Hospital of Montana and the Children’s Bereavement program for inviting us. I hope I helped the participants as much as it helped me!

Enjoy the warm weather that is approaching just in time for the weekend.

You may like it warmer, but Gabby says too much fur for me!

June 23, 2010

It's so hot the Gabby is turning her tummy up!

Our cat Gabby seems to prefer the cooler weather. As it warms up you will find her resting in this position more and more often!

I enjoy the sunshine and I enjoy the warm weather too. Since she doesn’t buy the cat food I come out on the winning end of the temperature deal.

Overnight¬† we expect partly cloudy skies and mild with low 50’s. That is the perfect night time temperature for tomatoes. Any cooler and they are not as happy.

Thursday partly sunny with a chance of isolated showers and thunderstorms. High near 80. Gabby won’t care much for that.

Friday partly sunny and stronger winds with isolated showers. High in the mid 70’s.

Saturday mostly sunny and mid 70’s.

Sunday sunny and upper 70’s.

That should make everyone happy until it gets toooo hot!

Fred

A much quieter weather day. Just high water!

June 22, 2010

Very green in the French Creek area above Wolf Creek

All the water and melting snow is keeping our creeks, stream and rivers high. This is a shot from this weekend after a good shower and thunderstorm Saturday night. It sure smelled good, but have not seen the creek run as high as it is in years!

A quieter weather pattern is expected for us the next couple of days. The upper level low pressure area responsible for the active weather the last couple of days has moved northeastward away from us.  Although we have some clouds to contend with along with a slight chance of isolated showers and thunderstorms it is much quiet on the radar screen today!

Flood warnings are out for areas along the Missouri River near Ulm. A flood warning for the Milk River near Harlem is also being watched closely.

The good news is that gradually warmer temperatures move into the area this week, sunshine tomorrow and a high around 80. That should help dry out some of the mud created from all the rainfall.

The 70’s also look to be common for this week and into the weekend with any showers slight and isolated.

After the last two days we can take a deep breath or two and get back on track. I hope you have a great day!

Funnel clouds being spotted at mid-day

Funnel cloud spotted near Dutton at Mid-Day Monday

A big thank you for Cliff Davis of Great Falls for forwarding this picture of a funnel cloud this morning.

Picture taken by a relative traveling near Power at about 1235 today. Dissipated shortly after picture was taken. Look closely at right of center in image, extending downward from cloud.

Active weather pattern continues after yesterday’s tornado in Billings that has gathered National attention. Thankfully no fatalities, but a reminder that “yes we do” have tornadoes in Montana. Just like the tornado in Lewistown in 1999. Damage but no injuries.

The outlook this afternoon is for rain and thunderstorms. I’ll have an update later in the day. I wanted to get the photo on asap!

Rain ending but a lot of high water!

June 18, 2010

High water from rain and melting snow!

Those planning outdoor activities this weekend need to be very aware of high rivers, streams and creeks in parts of Montana.  The combination of several inches of rain and melting snow is making flooding in some areas very possible.

Here is a link to the NWS webpage that provides the latest flood information, including Vaughn and the Muddy. http://bit.ly/9md3ku

At least for the time being our rain is coming to an end, with just slight chances of showers. Temperatures begin to warm up as well.

Those our for the weekend should be prepared for highs around 70 degrees and a chance of rain and afternoon showers and thunderstorms.

Stay safe!
