If you thought last night was cold, wait until tonight!

January 31, 2011

Clearing skies and a large mass of arctic air is sinking southward into Montana and boy did it get cold last night!

Sunny but still cold!

Here is a look at some of the hourly observations at the Great Falls International Airport while we were sleeping (well most of us!)

The first temperature reading is the air temperature, while the second “f” is the dew point each hour.  Brrrrr! The first reading is the one to watch!

Early morning lows!

NWS Predicted Lows Tonight!

We are in for the same thing tonight but even colder. It looks like at least -25 degrees. A little wind will push the wind chill down even colder.

The good thing is by Wednesday we will see much warmer temperatures, well into the 30’s again!

Stay warm as you can and don’t forget to protect your pets from the bitter temperatures outdoors.  Below you will find the lows from various parts of the state, including one at -33!

Winter weather makes a return overnight!

January 28, 2011

A portion of Central Montana, mainly east of the Rockies can expect winter-like conditions to develop overnight and extend into the weekend. Much colder temperatures as well, so don’t put away the snow shovels yet. I was out chipping away at the rest of the ice in front of my house this morning, so I am ready for another storm!

Blisters get in the way of chipping ice!

January 27, 2011

This is the second day that we have seen more clouds, which is keeping us from getting warmer! We can’t complain for January but the winds are strong and gusty again today.

The sun isn’t the only thing stubborn. It’s the ice on the side streets. I live on the wrong side of the street to get much afternoon sun, so this morning I was out hammering on the ice, trying to break it up. Some was easy, some was hard, and some just stayed where it was! Several inches thick but I am making some headway. Here is the result of some of my work and only one blister.

Stubborn thick ice!

My wife asked where my gloves were and I responded “they are in the garage.” So I have not excuse.

We do see a change in our weather pattern, that is why I was so anxious to get rid of the ice. A cold front this weekend will begin cooling us off with a chance of showers.

The good thing about the front is the gusty Chinook winds will go away for a while.

I hope you have a great day. If you are chipping ice, maybe wearing gloves wouldn’t be such a bad idea!

Fred

Gusty winds continue!

Cooler and snow

It’s unseasonable warm, but windy. Here some wind gusts!

January 26, 2011

The Chinook winds are back in a big way, especially along the Rocky Mountain Front. Strong crosswinds for those traveling north or south can be very dangerous for those pulling trailers or high profile vehicles.

Walking on thin ice today!

January 25, 2011

On the way to work this afternoon, I was enjoying the balmy upper 40 degree temperatures. Water is running everywhere and finally the warm winds are taking care of ice on area streets.

I thought I would check out the skating area at Gibson Park and see what was happening to the ice for skaters. Just as I thought the thin ice signs are up and the warm weather is affecting the pond as well.

The thin ice didn’t seem to both the fowl that frequent the place. Quite a few early afternoon bird watchers as well. In fact I even saw a couple families using the play equipment, it is that nice!

I hope you enjoy the warm weather. It should stay around a few more days but with stronger winds expected. Don’t be surprised if we end up in the 50’s. It is already 48 degrees at the airport at 1 pm! I am enjoying this weather.

Gibson Park Pond 1 pm January 25, 2011

Another angle of the birds enjoying the day!

Chinook winds are very, very welcome!

January 24, 2011

We just missed the snowstorm over the weekend. You didn’t have to far east or south to run into snow, blowing snow and winter weather. Friday we said we were right on the west edge of the watch area and that panned out for Great Falls with sunshine and melting ice! We do have some gusty Chinook winds, especially strong along the Rocky Mountain Front.

As we wind up the last full week of January it looks like our wishes for warm weather to melt all the ice off the side streets is coming true! Temperatures in the 40’s and even the possiblity of one day in the low 50’s before conditions cool off back to normal 30’s this coming weekend!

Overnight increasing clouds with a slight chance of rain or snow showers. Southwest winds will continue gusty up 30 mph which helps keep the night-time low near 30.

Tuesday mostly cloudy with a slight chance of showers, but the warm Chinook winds continue with a high in the mid 40’s.

Wednesday mostly sunny and warm winds with a high in the upper 40’s. Night lows drop into the upper 20’s.

Thursday sunny and breezy with a high in low 50’s.

Friday mostly sunny and our high temperature returns to the upper 30’s.

Saturday and Sunday partly sunny and seasonal with a high in the low 30’s.

It is nice to see the ice slowly disappearing on the side streets. I was even out this weekend chipping away at some ice near the driveway to break it up and speed up the melting process. On top of that I managed to get all the mud off our car by visiting a car wash Saturday night. Even at 9 pm there was a line, but the wait was worth it. So now I find my time driving carefully around pools of standing water. Funny how that works!

I hope you have a great day!

Fred

Winter weather makes a return overnight!

January 21, 2011

Our weather turns more winter-like again overnight. Moist air is moving in from the west and a Winter Weather Advisory has been posted for tonight and part of tomorrow.

Overnight we expect rain to change to snow with blowing snow due to gusty southwest winds up to 25 mph. Low 28.  Caution is advised as rain changing to snow can make roads very icy. Snow accumulation between 1″-2″ possible.

NWS Weather Story

Don’t be too alarmed however, this won’t last long!
