Winter returning to Montana overnight!

It has been a very busy day in the STORMTracker Weather Center as we prepare to return to winter-like conditions tonight. Sorry for the late post and it will short. The following is a brief statement from the Great Falls National Weather Service regarding the storm. Also below I have posted the various Advisories for the area. Drive safe and be aware of wet surfaces beginning to freeze later tonight!

IN THE NORTH…SNOW…WILL CONTINUE OVER THE ROCKY MOUNTAIN FRONT THROUGH THIS EVENING. SNOW ACCUMULATIONS 6 TO 12 INCHES HAVE BEEN REPORTED IN THE MOUNTAINS…WITH AN ADDITIONAL 3 TO 5 INCHES EXPECTED THROUGH TONIGHT.

IN THE CUT BANK AND HAVRE AREAS…NEW SNOWFALL TONIGHT WILL GENERALLY RANGE FROM 1 TO 2 INCHES…BUT UP TO 3 INCHES IN THE BEARS PAW MOUNTAINS.

OVER CENTRAL MONTANA…AN AREA OF MODERATE SNOWFALL IS LIKELY BEGINNING EARLY THIS EVENING AND CONTINUING INTO THURSDAY MORNING. SNOW ACCUMULATIONS OF 5 TO 9 INCHES ARE EXPECTED IN THE MOUNTAINS FROM EAST OF HELENA…TO NEIHART…THEN NORTHWARD INTO THE HIGHWOOD MOUNTAINS.

A GENERAL SNOWFALL OF 3 TO 6 INCHES IS POSSIBLE  IN THE LOWER ELEVATIONS AROUND HELENA…GREAT FALLS…STANFORD AND LEWISTOWN.

FOR THE BOULDER…TOWNSEND…BOZEMAN AND WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS  AREA…EXPECT A GENERAL SNOWFALL OF 2 TO 4 INCHES AT LOWER ELEVATIONS AND 4 TO 8 INCHES IN THE MOUNTAINS.

FURTHER SOUTHWEST…IN MADISON AND BEAVERHEAD COUNTIES …SNOW ACCUMULATIONS OF 1 TO 3 INCHES IS EXPECTED AT LOWER ELEVATIONS…AND 3 TO 5 INCHES IN THE MOUNTAINS.

IN ALL AREAS…WITH THE VERY WARM TEMPERATURES OF RECENT…PAVEMENT TEMPERATURES HAVE WARMED UP A BIT. THIS WARMING OF THE PAVEMENT COMBINED WITH FRESH SNOWFALL…AND BELOW FREEZING TEMPERATURES TONIGHT…WILL ALLOW FOR UNTREATED ROADWAYS TO BECOME ICY BENEATH  THE SNOW. THERE WILL BE SOME POCKETS OF BLOWING SNOW…WITH SOME
DRIFTING OF THE SNOW EXPECTED DURING THE OVERNIGHT HOURS.

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN GREAT FALLS HAS ISSUED A WINTER
WEATHER ADVISORY FOR SNOW...WHICH IS IN EFFECT UNTIL 11 AM MST
THURSDAY. THE WINTER STORM WATCH HAS BEEN REPLACED BY THIS
ADVISORY.

* TIMING AND MAIN IMPACT: SNOW WILL DEVELOP ACROSS SOUTHWEST AND
  CENTRAL MONTANA THIS EVENING AND CONTINUE THROUGH LATE MORNING
  ON THURSDAY.

* SNOW ACCUMULATIONS: EXPECT ACCUMULATIONS OF 3 TO 6 INCHES BELOW
  6000 FEET AND 4 TO 8 INCHES ABOVE 6000 FEET.

* WINDS AND VISIBILITY: WINDS WILL GENERALLY BE 10 MPH OR LESS
  THROUGH THE COURSE OF THIS EVENT...WITH THE EXCEPTION OF
  SOUTHWEST MONTANA POTENTIALLY SEEING GUSTS AROUND 20 MPH.
  VISIBILITY COULD DROP BELOW 0NE HALF MILE AT TIMES IN MODERATE
  SNOW.

* LOCATIONS AFFECTED INCLUDE: WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS...BATTLE RIDGE
  PASS...BOZEMAN...BOZEMAN PASS...TARGHEE PASS...WEST YELLOWSTONE...

A WINTER STORM WARNING FOR HEAVY SNOW MEANS SEVERE WINTER WEATHER
CONDITIONS ARE EXPECTED OR OCCURRING. SIGNIFICANT AMOUNTS OF SNOW
ARE FORECAST THAT WILL MAKE TRAVEL DANGEROUS. ONLY TRAVEL IN AN
EMERGENCY. IF YOU MUST...KEEP AN EXTRA FLASHLIGHT...FOOD...AND
WATER IN YOUR VEHICLE IN CASE OF AN EMERGENCY.

* SMALL STREAM FLOOD ADVISORY FOR MELTING SNOW IN...
  FERGUS COUNTY IN CENTRAL MONTANA...
  THIS INCLUDES THE CITY OF LEWISTOWN...
  JUDITH BASIN COUNTY IN CENTRAL MONTANA...
  THIS INCLUDES THE CITY OF STANFORD...

* UNTIL 1130 AM MST THURSDAY

* AT 1100 AM MST THIS MORNING...MINOR STREAM AND CREEK FLOODING HAS
  BEEN REPORTED IN JUDITH BASIN AND FERGUS COUNTIES. SOME AREAS THAT
  ARE BEING AFFECTED MOST INCLUDE LOCATIONS AROUND THE TOWN OF
  MOCCASIN...AND ALONG ROSS FORK CREEK. MINOR FLOODING ON ADDITIONAL
  SMALL STREAMS AND CREEKS...SUCH AS THE JUDITH RIVER AND BEAVER
  CREEK ARE ALSO POSSIBLE THROUGH TODAY.

* MOTORIST SHOULD BE AWARE THAT STREAMS WILL RUN THROUGH HIGH
  TODAY...AND POSSIBLY OUT OF THEIR BANKS AT TIMES.
  HOWEVER...WITH     COLDER TEMPERATURES EXPECTED TO MOVE INTO THE
  REGION TONIGHT...EXPECT ANY STANDING WATER TO FREEZE ON PAVEMENT
  SURFACES...AND UNTREATED ROADWAYS COULD BECOME ICE COVERED.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

DO NOT DRIVE YOUR VEHICLE INTO AREAS WHERE THE WATER COVERS THE
ROADWAY. THE WATER DEPTH MAY BE TOO GREAT TO ALLOW YOUR CAR TO CROSS
SAFELY. MOVE TO HIGHER GROUND.

TO REPORT FLOODING...HAVE THE NEAREST LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCY RELAY
YOUR REPORT TO THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE FORECAST OFFICE.
